Alumni

SSP is committed to supporting our graduates throughout their careers. Alumni are welcome at most SSP/CSS events, and we encourage alumni to give back to SSP by participating in the alumni mentor program. Below are some of the resources and opportunities available to alumni.

(Re)Connect With SSP

SSP encourages alumni to remain engaged with the program, no matter how long ago they graduated. Check out the opportunities below or reach out to our Assistant Director of Admissions and Alumni Engagement, Nazdar Barzani, for more ways to get involved with the SSP Community.

  • Alumni Mentor Program: The SSP Alumni Mentor program connects current SSP students with alumni working in their security subfield or organization of interest. To learn more and sign up to be a mentor, reach out to Nazdar Barzani. Once a student has been put into contact with an alumni mentor, both parties are expected to make a good-faith effort to cultivate the relationship. The student-alumni mentor experience can be extremely rewarding, but like any good mentorship, it requires an investment of time and energy. Applications open in January and September of each year. The time commitment is flexible and can be determined by the mentor and their mentee.
  • Admissions Committee: The Admissions Team invites alumni to serve as volunteers on the Admissions Review Committee, which convenes from October to February of each year for incoming Spring and Fall cohorts. Volunteers will be assigned approximately 10-30 applications to evaluate over the course of the cycle. Alumni play a critical role in ensuring we are welcoming a diverse class and building a strong generation of future SSP graduates.
  • Events: SSP alumni are encouraged to help plan, advocate for, and attend all public SSP events, as well as many events that are not open to the general public, such as our lunch talks, workshops, and guest lectures. We also offer alumni-only events, including social and networking events like the Fall Reunion BBQ, Covert Affair Gala, John Carroll Weekend, and the highly-anticipated upcoming 50 Year Milestone. To receive updates about all upcoming events and programming through the monthly newsletter, please ensure your alumni record is up to date.
  • CSS Speaker Series: The Center for Security Studies offers a series of speakerships each semester. This is an opportunity to provide a one hour “mini lecture” on your topic of choice. Examples of past speaker series events can be found here and here. For more information, please contact Jenna DeFosse, Assistant Director of Communications & Stakeholder Engagement.
  • Alumni Newsletter: SSP sends out a monthly newsletter to our alumni that includes news, job opportunities, upcoming events, and chances to get involved with SSP. Click here to sign up and be added to the list for our monthly newsletter.
  • Donate to SSP: Financial contributions can be made online via the online giving form. Simply enter the donation amount in the “Other” section and indicate “Center for Security Studies” in the text box. On the second page, you can also indicate if your gift is in memory of or tribute to someone, if your employer will match your gift, or if you would like to remain anonymous. Thank you for your support!
